There are a few things that are necessary if you wish to make money as a freelance writer, the most obvious of which is a desire to write. However there are other things that will help to decide whether or not you can make it work for you.
Without a desire to write and an enjoyment of doing so, you will struggle to find the inspiration to write. Motivation is important when you are in no way under the oversight of another person, and with freelance writing this is especially true. If you hate what you are doing, then you are not likely to be motivated to do as much as you would if you liked it, and hence won't make as much money.
Beyond enjoyment comes ability. Nobody is going to want a website full of illegible articles, or to buy articles that are filled with spelling errors. Thus, a good grasp of the language in which you choose to write in is essential. You do not have to be perfect, because running anything that you write through a word processing program or another program that will check your spelling and grammar will help you to catch any errors. Carefully checking your work before submission can help too. However a word processing program will not make up for a complete lack of ability in a particular written language.
If you are not working from a list of articles that someone has requested from you, then ideas are also required-potentially in the thousands if you wish to do this for any great length of time. An area of expertise comes in useful here, because if there is a particular area in which you are very knowledgeable then writing articles is much easier, than if you need to thoroughly research a topic for every article that you write.
Who buys articles from freelance writers-where can you make some money?
The first stop for many freelance writers would be article directories, such as Associated Content or Helium. These directories pay you based on performance, so the more times your article is viewed, the more you get paid, but may also offer other ways to earn money such as giving you a platform through which to sell to website owners, for them to use on their site. Some directories might not pay at all, simply offering web masters a way to gain links back to their own site, so you need to be sure you seek out paying directories.
Web master forums may also give you a way to sell your articles. You will find that many have a place where you can advertise content for sale, or else a place for web masters to advertise their article needs. You may then bid to work on these, potentially having to show examples of your work. Having a small portfolio of work that has not been purchased by another web master, or else links to articles that you have successfully submitted to an article directory is useful for this purpose.
It won't take long to learn how to write articles that people want to read, and so begin to make money as a freelance writer.
