This article provides information on the different kinds of yoga mats.

Hands down, one of the most popular accessories for the art of yoga is the yoga mat. There are several different types that are available for everyone, whether you are a beginner or have been practicing for years. There are also benefits and drawbacks to each type, so youll want to get the skinny on all of the most popular kinds to figure out which type will suit you best and become your favorite.

Most people when they first start out practicing just go for your basic, standard, cheap yoga mat. These can be found just about anywhere, like Kmart or Target. It probably is a good idea to start out with the cheapies until you start figuring out what qualities you need in one. Also, when people start out, they sometimes find that yoga is not for them, so you dont want to quit going to class and be stuck with a super expensive accessory. There are a lot of different types of yoga mats that are different colors, made of different materials, and some that are even environmentally friendly.

Unfortunately, the cheap standard yoga mats are pretty thin, which means that they dont provide much cushion or support. Many people also complain that they also have a really strong chemical smell to them and are made using processes that are not good for the environment. Not only that, but they are made using chemicals called phthalates, which are used to soften plastics. Studies on rodents have indicated liver damage, kidney damage, and lung damage. When these mats are left in hot cars and heat up, they release those chemicals.

Some of the most popular accessories that people use are cork and jute mats. These are affordable and environmentally friendly alternatives to standard ones. A lot of people like this option, but the only problem is that they dont last very long before they fall apart. They are made from porous plants, and as the material absorbs your sweat they begin to become weak and they also begin to smell strange. Rubber yoga mats are even more popular with people. They are strong and durable, and affordable too. Rubber is a pretty sustainable material from the rubber tree. The trick here is to buy natural rubber, not synthetic rubber. Synthetic rubber should be avoided if you are allergic to latex. If you are allergic to latex and you dont want to work out on a chemical field, a natural rubber yoga mat is probably your best bet.
