Finding mold growing in your house can make you cringe with disgust. It is usually not because your home is dirty, but more like there is a water leak or moisture issue somewhere.

Have you ever discovered mold growing in your home and wondered where it came from? Did it make you feel like your home was nasty? Mold does not necessarily mean you have a nasty house, it usually means there is a water problem somewhere. People associate mold with nastiness, but this usually only happens with food items are left in the refrigerator too long. Mold that can damage the home is usually caused by water or moisture somewhere it should not be and it could cost you thousands of dollars to have removed.

Mold can be caused by too much moisture in the home. This can be due to poor ventilation in places like a basement, kitchen, or bathrooms. If your clothes dryer is not vented properly, this can cause moisture too. Other water issues that cause mold are water leaks. These can be from a water pipe or a leak in your roof or basement. Once the water has been there for at least 24 hours and the mold has warmth and food, it will begin to grow. It can grow on wood, carpets, rugs, drywall, paper, and fabrics. Eventually the mold will destroy these things if it is not killed. Mold spores can even float in the air.

When mold spores float in the air or travel through the air ducts in your home, this is when it becomes an unhealthy situation for you and your family. Breathing the spores into your lungs can cause cold and allergy like symptoms and can affect some people very badly. Many times there can be mold in the home and people that are exposed to it will make many trips to a doctor for medication for what they think are allergies when in reality the symptoms would go away if the mold in their home was found and removed.

You can get rid of mold and the bacteria from it by using bleach or other cleaning produces designed to kill it. When a home has a large infestation of mold, it could be necessary to call in a professional water damage company to find the mold and kill it. They will also have to figure out what caused it to begin with. They know how to make sure the problem is gone so the mold does not return. Check with your home insurance company to make sure you are covered for the removal and repairs. It could be necessary for you to leave the home while the work is being done.

The best way to prevent mold in your home is to prevent moisture and water damage problems. This means keep an eye of your plumbing and check your roof, basement, and even your crawlspace for leaks as well. Keep standing water away from the foundation of your home. Clean up spills as soon as they happen and use care and a minimum of water when you mop and shampoo carpets. Keep water using appliance leak free to.
