Beekeeping is the art of maintaining the various aspects of bee hives. This can be a dangerous job if proper protection isn’t worn. The process of beekeeping has been in the United States since the 1860’s. It is found mainly in the states of California and Pennsylvania. In many instances, bee keeping is a family business that spans over many generations. In many instances it even continues to take place on the same land.
The number of beekeeping operations have continued to dwindle around the United States over the past 20 years. Many of these businesses were destroyed due to an infestation of either beetles or mites that ruined the operations. While beekeepers work hard to prevent such critters from being a nuisance, it can’t always be done.
There are some smaller beekeeping operations out there though that are successful. They don’t get counted in the number of them in existence because they aren’t main businesses. Instead they may be a side operation on the land that someone farms or ranches. It is common for high school age children living in such areas to engage in beekeeping operations. Some people only produce enough honey from their operation for their own personal use.
Some of the more advanced beekeeping operations are very mobile. They take the bees along a migration path that allows them to be in the very best possible climate at all times. This can be a time consuming task and some of the bee hives are very heavy. You may not realize it but some of them hold up to 50,000 bees.
In order for beekeeping to be effective, the bees have to be able to continue about their business. They don’t deal well with stress or human interactions. The entire process that takes place inside of a bee hive is very detailed. Some of them work to produce beeswax, some build the honeycomb. The queen bee has only one job – to continually find mates so that there are plenty of new bees to produce the beeswax.
Most beekeepers will tell you that then really enjoy the work they do. They understand the possible dangers of the work, but they still do it. They also have a great deal of respect for the bees due to the amount of work that they are able to do.
