The idea of school uniforms is something that more schools are going to. With issues of children getting beat up for their fancy jackets, offensive t-shirts, and name brand shoes being part of the social status one has at the school administrations are concerned. Parents are often part of this decision as well. Since they want their children to go to school to learn, they definitely want to do all they can to reduce these other issues from coming up.
The are plenty of issues to consider on both sides of the stick when it comes to school uniforms. Some students and parents believe it hinders their ability to be identified as a person and not as part of a group. It can be difficult trying to find your place in school and with uniforms a student may feel that they don’t really matter and that they are just part of the crowd.
Some researchers believe that the introduction of school uniforms will definitely get students to conform to the standards that are in place. That will lead to fewer of them using drugs, alcohol, and engaging in sexual intercourse. They also believe it will encourage students to attend school more often than they do now, their academic work will improve, and they will be encouraged to join extracurricular activities.
None of those issues have been able to be proven though. However, one significant achievement at schools where uniforms were implemented is that there is less focus on what a person wears. This means other students are more receptive to what the individual has to offer in the way of personality and kindness. Judgments aren’t being made based on what type of shoes or jeans that someone is wearing.
Some of the resistance to school uniforms has to do with the colors of what is offered or the type of clothing. Not all girls are comfortable wearing shirts daily. If they have the option of also wearing slacks the same color then it can be more acceptable. Boys also want to be comfortable so school uniforms that require them to wear ties and stiff shirts aren’t going to be well accepted.
