Labor Day Parades

One of the activities that people look forward to on Labor Day are the parades. There are some that are huge events with hundreds of thousands of people gathering. Others are much smaller as they are done in small towns and cities all over the Nation.

Since these Labor Day parades are to honor those that do work hard each day, people should feel proud of their efforts. It takes people in all professions for us to be able to enjoy the society we are a part of. The first Labor Day parade took place in New York City in 1882. That parade continued annually until 2007 when one was not planned due to security issues and the high cost of the parade event.

The Labor Day parades we enjoy today are much different than those of the early days though. They were actually protests by workers who were trying to get business owners to stop making them work long hours in poor working conditions. They were also fighting for decent pay as some of them worked 16 hours a day for very little in wages. The employers let them march in the parades but they weren’t paid for that day off from work. More than 10,000 employees marched in that first Labor Day parade in 1882.

The internet is a great place to find out the deep history of each Labor Day parade in any given area. You can also find out about current events that you may want to travel to enjoy. There are wonderful Labor Day events planned around the country, and the kick of for the all day events is the parade. As the sun goes down, the spectacular fireworks end the evening. During the day though people can have a blast enjoying food, fun, games, music, and interacting with other people.

If your town doesn’t have a Labor Day parade, you should take to your city counsel about it. Offer to help organize the event and get other volunteers on board to help you. There are plenty of reasons to gather people in the community for a wonderful Labor Day parade. As this becomes an annual event, you will find people looking forward to it and they event will continue to grow both in participants and in spectators.
