Oil is a natural resource that our society is heavily dependent on. Most of us are aware of oil because we use it in our vehicles. We also use it as a source of energy for our homes and the businesses we get things from use it as well. Oil isn’t cheap though and that is an issue many people continue to be upset with. The fact that the United States has to have so much oil imported really increases the cost of it for consumers.
Petroleum is oil in the raw form, and it has to be refined to make the finished product for consumers to use. Oil often has to be carried long distances on ships and through pipelines to reach the refineries. This can be a very dangerous issue because accidents and oil spills do happen. This can be very devastating on the water supply and the aquatic life that depends on that water to survive.
As a result, more safety issues have been put into place. The oil pipelines have to be constantly checked over for any signs of wear or damage. This is to help reduce the problems with large oil spills. These efforts have made a significant difference but there are still too many instances taking place.
The process of drilling for oil is very expensive and very time consuming to get started. Careful testing has to be done at various stages to ensure that the oil is going to be good quality. The effects of drilling for oil in any location has to be taken into consideration when it comes to the environment as well. You certainly don’t want any damage to occur in such areas.
Countries all over the world are very dependent on oil. More than 9 million barrels of it are produced each day and at least 7 million barrels of it are consumed each day. They others are stored in oil reserves or they are in transit to other locations. The fear of oil reserves one day being depleted have some people nervous though. As the cost of it continues to skyrocket out of control, it has stirred up an interest in looking for alternatives to oil use.
