Oil spills can happen anywhere that vehicles travel. This oil can be dangerous to the environment so it should be cleaned up as best as you can. Sometimes a person will have their oil drain plug come loose and all of the oil in there can spill out. Damage to the oil pan underneath the vehicle can result in the oil spilling out too. Since most standard vehicles hold approximately 5 quarts of oil, that can be quite a mess.
You can take care of these types of oil spills by covering them with various types of materials. Most auto shops sell a product called spill dry that you cover the oil with. Let it sit for a while and then you can scoop it up. Some people reuse this spill dry but it is best if you just through it out. You can also use a bag of kitty litter or oatmeal from the kitchen if you need something fast to clean up the oil spill. You definitely don’t want children or pets to get near it.
While these types of oil spills can be annoying, they generally don’t cause too much damage. They can be cleaned up in a couple of hours without any long term effects. This isn’t always the case though. Many ships carry oil in the oceans and when they have spills it can create havoc on the ecosystems that live in that body of water. The damages from gallons of oil being spilled into the water can take decades to fully be recovered from.
As a result, the government has implemented stricter guidelines for hauling oil on ships. Most of it has to be secured in large barrels that have lids on them that will be difficult to open up even if they do fall into the water. Companies are also being held liable for the costs of cleaning up the water from oil spills that they are responsible for. They can also be slapped with huge fines as a deterrent from future events taking place that are similar in nature.
The methods for removing the oil from the water depends on how much has been spilled and where it has taken place. In some instances there are some chemicals that can be used to separate the oil from the water and then to remove it. In other instances though there is nothing anyone can do but let nature run its course.
