Some reporters work for local TV stations, newspapers, magazines, or other privately owned entities. Professional reporters must have a degree in journalism, mass communications, or related field. Some small town newspapers will hire individuals with good writing and communication skills though because they don’t have the funds to pay for top dollar reporters. The pay for a report depends on where they work and their experience. Annual salary can range from $12,000 to $45,000.

The work environment for a report is one that constantly changes. It can be stressful too trying to find the right stories that sell, getting the final copy approved by the editor, and meeting strict deadlines for printing. The hours can be very long because you can’t stop in the middle of something when the deadline is looming over you. Most newspaper and magazine staff have shifts so that the production is running around the clock.

Many individuals who are interested in becoming a report get experience while they are in high school. They can work on the school newspaper or help put the school yearbook together. During college there are plenty of paid and unpaid reporter internships at various locations that students can take advantage of. Many of these internships can turn into full time positions after graduation if the employer is happy with the work of the student. There is plenty of opportunity for a report to work in the area they are interested in.
