Soaring gas prices and a busy work week don't have to mean a summer sans vacation. Below are some ideas that will help you make the most of summer - even if you don't have a week to spend on the shores of Hawaii.

Soaring gas prices and a busy work week don't have to mean a summer sans vacation. Below are some ideas that will help you make the most of summer - even if you don't have a week to spend on the shores of Hawaii.

1. Head to a local campground.
Campgrounds are a great way to get back to nature without driving halfway across the country. Build a campfire, roast marshmallows, tell some ghost stories, and sleep under the stars.

2. Stay in a B&B.
Bed and breakfasts are tried and true ways to feel at home no matter what city you're in. If you can't get away for a full week, head to a B&B for a weekend to enjoy a little R&R.

3. Take the kids to an amusement park.
Roller coasters, log rides, funnel cake - amusement parks seem to have it all. Best of all, you can head out for a day of fun and still make it home in time for dinner. That is, if you can stomach the thought of food after a day of cotton candy and elephant ears.

4. Take a hike.
Put on some breathable clothing and some comfortable shoes and head out for an adventure! Bring your kids, your dog, your mp3 player, or just enjoy the sounds of nature. And make sure to take (and drink) plenty of water!

5. Go to an outdoor concert.
Willie Nelson is one thing. Willie Nelson, live, on an outdoor stage is another. Check around and see who is coming to town and when. Great music and great friends can make for a summer to remember.

6. Travel your city like a tourist.
Admit it - there are places in your fair city you've been meaning to venture. That quaint bistro, that historical relic, that hotel you've driven by hundreds of times. Check them out and see your city the way passerby do. You just might like what you find!

7. Host a soiree.
Choose a theme, invite your closest pals, and party the night away. Costumes, specialty drinks, and party games only add to the fun and festivities! So go ahead, make sure everyone's got an umbrella drink in hand, and celebrate summer in style.

8. Get wet.
Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, even paddle boating - there are lots of ways to have water-related fun this summer. Not near any oceans, lakes, or rivers? Buy some squirt guns and remember what you used to love about summer.

9. Get creative.
Take a cooking class, or go to a museum. Painting, photography, yoga, and pottery are all great ways to express yourself and relieve stress.

10. Head to the market.
Local farmer's markets and produce stands are a great way to support your community while stocking up on some healthy, unprocessed foods. Pick up some summer time favorites like corn on the cob, watermelon, tomatoes, peaches, and lemons for lemonade!
