The process of transmitting messages without spoken words is referred to as nonverbal communication. Such messages can be conveyed through facial expressions, gestures, and posture. Nonverbal communication can also be conveyed by clothing, shoes, hairstyles, jewelry, and even architecture and symbols. Additionally, nonverbal communication is intertwined within speech through intonation, vocal variety and volume, inflection, quality, speed, and fluency.
Stress is one of the easiest human conditions to detect through body language because it makes its presence so obvious and easy to read. A person in stress will display a noticeable change in breathing pattern. These changes can either be displayed as panting and rapid intake of air due to accelerated heartbeat or attempts at prolonged inhaling with a widely open mouth to relieve shortness of breath.
